While still a student in business administration at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Josh Shandell exhibited leadership in two on-campus clubs. Along with his role as co-president of the Undergraduate Real Estate Club, Josh Shandell founded Cooking for a Cause, which regularly provides Ann Arbor’s homeless population with nutritious meals.
Cooking for a Cause volunteers deliver meals to the Salvation Army’s Ken and Marianna Staples Family Center, which also provides rehabilitative services. Students make regionally based meals in a commercial-type kitchen on campus. These events became known as “cooking days,” where 10 to 12 students volunteered at each event. A sample menu might include a Southwestern salad with black beans, corn, and tomatoes, along with turkey chili and cornbread. Going beyond providing a meal, the volunteers often add excitement by inviting special guests. Ben Wallace, formerly of the Detroit Pistons, recently regaled the crowd with stories of his years on the court.
